Shark Finning Must Stop by aaronjohngregory Shark Finning Must Stop by aaronjohngregory
Sharks are slaughtered around the world for their fins, which are used in tasteless soups considered an upper class delicacy in China. Studies estimate the number of sharks killed annually to range from 26 million to 73 million. This staggering amount will wipe several species of sharks off the planet in the next ten years, guaranteed. Once the fins are hacked off of the living animal, it's wiggling, writhing body is thrown overboard, floating to the bottom where it suffocates, since sharks need to swim to breath, and or is eaten slowly by other animals. It's a disgusting trade, and insanely barbaric practice, that must be stopped.

This piece won 2nd place, "Best of Show" at the annual Academy of Art Spring Show, 2013, in the category of Online Illustration. Rock!

Great illustration, really hits home your point and makes you feel sympathetic towards the shark.
I didn't know they threw them back still alive after mutilating them. An apex predator like a shark getting finished off by crabs, that's F'ed up.

Yeah, it's about as brutal as brutal gets. Thankfully more and more people are becoming aware! Thanks for checking it out.

I've heard of a lot of things like this, but I didn't know this specifically was a real thing until now.... People and their weird "delicacies". :( The soup part surprises me, though. I was waiting for you to say they are used as an aphrodisiac like other random parts of animals.

It is an important topic. There are many similar barbaric customs that would be OK if there were 1 million people on the planet but now we are 7 billion aiming for 10 and a lot of those desperately poor and prepared to do any barbaric act to feed their families. The only way to stop it is to reach those that actually eat this stuff and make them understand and appreciate the beauty of living things rahter than to see nature as a resource to be tapped. This is a very uphill battle and very much a generation-culture issue.

It's been too long since I helped spread this message as well.  But I'm going to change that.
