Shark Finning Must Stop by aaronjohngregory Shark Finning Must Stop by aaronjohngregory
Sharks are slaughtered around the world for their fins, which are used in tasteless soups considered an upper class delicacy in China. Studies estimate the number of sharks killed annually to range from 26 million to 73 million. This staggering amount will wipe several species of sharks off the planet in the next ten years, guaranteed. Once the fins are hacked off of the living animal, it's wiggling, writhing body is thrown overboard, floating to the bottom where it suffocates, since sharks need to swim to breath, and or is eaten slowly by other animals. It's a disgusting trade, and insanely barbaric practice, that must be stopped.

This piece won 2nd place, "Best of Show" at the annual Academy of Art Spring Show, 2013, in the category of Online Illustration. Rock!

Great illustration, really hits home your point and makes you feel sympathetic towards the shark.
I didn't know they threw them back still alive after mutilating them. An apex predator like a shark getting finished off by crabs, that's F'ed up.

Yeah, it's about as brutal as brutal gets. Thankfully more and more people are becoming aware! Thanks for checking it out.

I've heard of a lot of things like this, but I didn't know this specifically was a real thing until now.... People and their weird "delicacies". :( The soup part surprises me, though. I was waiting for you to say they are used as an aphrodisiac like other random parts of animals.

Here in China, at least, its just used as a status symbol kinda thing ('you're poor and you eat carp, I'm rich so I eat shark' etc. ) or as a delicacy served at weddings. I once ate it, not knowing what it was, and yes, it was completely tasteless :/

Once I went to a $500 per plate dinner at an event in Philadelphia and I experienced the same thing. (When my dad was alive he was a history teacher at a private school so a lot of his former students grew up to be rich, hence the invite, and luckily we didn't have to pay for our meals!) The meal was awful, though. I thought, this is probably going to taste SO GOOD because it's so expensive.... Nope. It was some kind of overcooked seafood with rubbery gray noodles. And everyone else hated it, too. (Other teachers from the school.) Kind of funny to watch middle-aged adults playing with their food in an attempt to make it look like they had eaten it, but not really. Give me cheap food any day!

It is an important topic. There are many similar barbaric customs that would be OK if there were 1 million people on the planet but now we are 7 billion aiming for 10 and a lot of those desperately poor and prepared to do any barbaric act to feed their families. The only way to stop it is to reach those that actually eat this stuff and make them understand and appreciate the beauty of living things rahter than to see nature as a resource to be tapped. This is a very uphill battle and very much a generation-culture issue.

This savagery has to stop and fortunately progress is made in that direction. The protection of sharks has been improved in severa countries, no take zones the size of europe have been established, only the enforcement in those county is rather poor due to lacking funds.
I hope that some of the western countries enter this effort soon so there finally will be considerable force behind all those words.
Anyone who is interested in this topic might want to check out the organisation "shark project" They played a vital role in converting costa rica from one of the top fin selling countries to an opposing country

Yeah, ive heard about this before. Its quite fucked up the things they do to them. At least they should have the decency of killing them and harvesting their flesh and skin. Im pretty sure your a fan of that Discovery Channel show. I forgot what the name of it, but it was about the group of scientist and activists who have a ship and try to thwart the Chinese fishing ships from doing this like pirates. I remember they also have a boat called "Godzilla" or "Gojira" which i found to be VERY badass lol.

They're killing machines, but I know, someone has to kill quickly what's slowly dying anyway. I love the most recent story in the news where a great white "helps" his buddy out by eating him right off a fisherman's hook.

People kill millions of sharks each year.
Who's more of a killing machine?
